Updated: Oct 4, 2018

Marketers LOVE holidays - and for good reason! National holidays alone have presented business owners with an opportunity to easily advertise and attracts customers for years. Now, as we hurdle forward in the Age of Technology, you can find a holiday for any day of the year online. From the forward-thinking (National Bike to Work Day) to the absurd (National Towel Day), you can find a holiday that will catch the attention of your audience!

Your marketing strategy will always have better results with a little bit of planning, as with most things in business. So, as we roll through August, start thinking about some upcoming holidays that could work for your company and how you can implement a plan! Choosing one or two each month will give your accounts an extra little push when content gets thin. Here are a few ideas to last through the end of the year:

September 2018📷- National Suicide Awareness & Prevention Month

3: Labor Day #LaborDay

5: International Day of Charity #CharityDayTell your followers what charities you support! If you don’t, this is a good day to start!

9: National Grandparents Day #NationalGrandparentsDay

19: Talk Like a Pirate Day #TalkLikeAPirateDayThis one is popular on social media, so if you’re comfortable doing a silly one I recommend this one! It’ll have a higher number of people following the tags, making your posts more likely to be seen. Check out this example from Tidy Cats.

22: First Day of Fall 28: National Good Neighbor Day #GoodNeighborDayGive the businesses around you a shoutout!

October 2018📷 – Breast Cancer Awareness Month

1: International Coffee Day #InternationalCoffeeDay - Extra points for creativity! Here's an example from Nissan!

4: National Taco Day #NationalTacoDayAnother heavily followed silly holiday with high traffic on the tags!

5: World Teachers Day #WorldTeachersDay 10: World Mental Health Day #WorldMentalHeathDay

14-20: National Business Women’s Week

16: Bosses Day #BossesDay

18: Get to Know Your Customers Day #GetToKnowYourCustomersDayUtilize the Poll add-on in your Instagram stories to find out what your customers really like! Customers respond more readily to a multiple-choice question than an open-ended one, so give them two things to pick between and see which ones they like better! 31: Halloween #HalloweenIf you’re not letting your employees dress up for Halloween and posting it to Instagram you are missing on a golden opportunity. Example.

November 2018📷 – No Shave November (raising awareness about men’s health)

3: National Sandwich Day #NationalSandwichDay -I think we all know of a popular downtown sandwich spot that could run with this one 😉

4: National Candy Day #NationalCandyDayHave a big jar full of candy out all week so that customers can guess how many are inside and on this day announce the winner with a free item that has your logo on it (tshirts are great!)- plus the candy!

11: Veterans Day #VeteransDay

13: World Kindness Day #WKD

20: National Entrepreneurs Day #EntrepreneursDayAre you an entrepreneur? Tell your followers how your business got started!

22: Thanksgiving Day #Thanksgiving

23: Black Friday

24: Small Business Saturday #ShopSmallThis should be something everyone around Harford County is participating in. Run a great promotion or sale and then get the word out early!

26: Cyber Monday #CyberMonday

27: National Day of Giving #GivingTuesday

December 2018📷

4: National Cookie Day #NationalCookieDay

15: National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day – Take a page out of Chick-Fil-A’s book and make your customers dress up to get a discount! Ugly sweater gets 10% off.

21: First Day of Winter

24: Christmas Eve- Give us a recap of 2018 for your business and tell us what you’re thankful for (the customers, obviously)! Pro level: create an infographic with the info!

25: Christmas Day 31: New Year’s Eve #NYE

These ideas are great but the impact is so much stronger when you give them a little attention on your social media. If you do any kind of marketing, make sure you’re showing your fan base that you’re doing it! Snap a quick photo to put on Facebook and Instagram and make a note about it in your next email newsletter! If you have an idea you want to bounce off someone, I want to hear it! Happy posting!
